From Rio 1992 to Rio 2012: 20 years of Sustainable Mountain Development efforts. What have we learned and where should we go?
The World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Rio de Janeiro 1992 put mountains in the global policy and development map by introducing a specific chapter (Chap. 13) on mountains as fragile ecosystems in the Agenda 21. Twenty years later, Rio 2012 provides an excellent opportunity to assess Sustainable Mountain Development (SMD) efforts. In the framework of the Mountain Partnership (MP) Initiative, SDC has initiated and co-funds regional and global review studies necessary to: • take stock of what has been achieved in promoting SMD since 1992 in different mountain areas of the world; • learn what has worked, what has not and why; and • identify future challenges and opportunities for promoting SMD
